The guides should be kept clean of dirt, particularly in the area of the bottom of the guide pocket where dust and dirt can accumulate.  On both anodized aluminum and stainless steel curtains, the curtains should be cleaned minimum once a year with a damp rag and a non-abrasive cleaner.  For crank operated shutters grease the gear box once a year.  At least once a year the curtain balance should be checked and the spring tension should be adjusted if necessary.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR FINISHING

Wood shutters should always be finished on all surfaces prior to installation, according to finish manufacturers instructions.  We recommend standing the curtain on it's end in a semi-circle, as illustrated below, in order to better facilitate the finishing of the shutter.  This allows better access for finishing between the slats.
